![]() The canvas, which has been dated to around 1576, falls within the artist’s Italian period and is considered to be one of the last versions of this subject painted by El Greco before his departure for Spain. ![]() While in the Contini-Bonacossi collection it was first exhibited to the public in an exhibition held in Rome in 1930. From the US it passed once again to Florence to the collection of Alessandro Contini-Bonacossi, then entered the Villa Favorita via Stanley Moss. In 1927 it was in London, then with two commercial galleries: Trotti & Cie. The painting was in the Corsini collection in Florence then entered the collection of Luigi Grassi in the same city. The present canvas was acquired by Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza in 1975. Various paintings on this subject are recorded in the inventories drawn up on the artist’s death in 1614 and on the occasion of his son Jorge Manuel’s marriage in 1621. In the case of this subject, a comparison with Annunciations from his Italian and Spanish years reveals the transformation of his style over the years. ![]() Along with his depictions of The Adoration of the Shepherds, Saint Paul, and the mystic Saint Francis, his various versions of the Annunciation allow us to reconstruct his style and artistic evolution through a single subject.
